"I have participated in many teleclasses and it always amazes me how effective they are! You can almost see the other callers and their personalities come through their voices. The Conversation Cafe teleclass is a good opportunity to try out the teleclass format and get your questions answered."
Kim Wright, teleclass participant

Requested Donation

Conversation Café is a project of the New Road Map Foundation, which is raising funds to keep the support and outreach for Conversation Cafés sustainable. The instructor is a volunteer dedicated to our purpose of creating a culture of face-to-face public conversations that are respectful, inclusive, and inspire new understandings.

To help us spread Conversation Cafés everywhere,, we ask that participants pay $20 for the training via the link above, or agree to host four public Conversation Cafés in a public restaurant, café, library or other public setting. If you want to do the public Conversation Cafes you can choose when and where to do them. Just let us know your plan or talk with Katharine about your ideas.

Preparation before the Host Training

To prepare for the telephone host training:

  1. Please download and print the Host Manual (MS Word file) and the Wallet Cards (PDF file). These links are also available along with other hosting resources at www.conversationcafe.org/hosts_downloads.html.
  2. Please read the 4-page Host Manual before the training.
  3. Write down any questions you have on hosting or starting a conversation cafe. Email them to Katharine ahead of the class if you can.
  4. Invite a small group of friends together to practice your hosting skills after the training. Plan to do this on the day of or after the host training. Set aside a 90-minute time frame to go through the whole conversation cafe process. We suggest at least 4 and not more than 8 people.

What is a TeleClass?

A TeleClass is a live, interactive training class conducted over the telephone through state-of-the-art teleconferencing bridge systems. You receive timely tips, tools, strategies and techniques over the telephone that can benefit your life immediately. All of this from the convenience of your home or office with no travel time.

How Does It Work?

Call the conference number at the start time. Each TeleClass is facilitated by a trained TeleClass leader. The TeleClass leader welcomes each caller and asks their name and where they are from. TeleClass sessions are usually one hour long, sometimes discussion-based, and occasionally lecture-based. Just like a live seminar, students may participate as much —or as little— as they wish.

How much does the conference call cost?

The telephone bridge is located in Los Angeles, California. For most people, there is a long distance charge for placing the call. If you are located in the United States, your phone rate may be as low as 5 or 6 cents a minute, or between $3.00 and $4.00 per call.

Conference Call Etiquette

  1. Use your telephone's mute button. If you don't have a mute button, please call from a quiet location.
  2. If you have a two-line phone, please turn the ringer off of the second line.
  3. Put pets in another room so that the class will not be interrupted by a barking dog or similar disturbance.
  4. Don't use a speakerphone unless you use the mute button. Pick up the handset when you share and put the mute button on when you're just listening.
  5. Sharing: I will ask for callers to share throughout the call. Please wait to be prompted. If/when you do share, say something like, "Katharine, this is Bob from Seattle."
  6. Early/Late Please don't call the bridge before the scheduled time—another conference may be in session. If you're late to the call, no problem, just dial in and be silent until you catch on to what's being discussed.
