By Lorie Wood, Conversation Café Administrator The much talked about and very much anticipated new and improved website is finally here. It made its debut mid-January 2008 just in time for the launch of Conversation Week 2008.
We've been asking folks for additional ways in which we can support your CC endeavors and we were given a number of great ideas. While not all are implemented yet, we are definitely working towards making the CC website an invaluable tool for hosts. Some of the new features are:

Using CCs to Help Create a more Peaceful World What does breakfast, good conversation and a red, Victorian, bed and breakfast have to do with Conversation Cafes? Lots! The Red Victorian Bed & Breakfast Peace Center in San Francisco 's Haight-Ashbury district near Golden Gate Park , founded by Sami Sunchild, is one of our CC Cousins! She opened The Red Vic in 1977 and has hosted over 250,000 people from all over the world. Patrons of the B&B participate in the conversations along with invited guests and drop-ins. The conversations are free and a continental breakfast is available for five dollars. Prepared breakfasts and brunches are also offered. A glass fish bowl of topics is in the middle of the table to suggest topics related to personal insights and experiences acquired through travel or in the course of life. |

Ask Susan! |

By Susan Partnow, co-founder, Conversation Café and Executive Director, Global Citizen Journey Cold feet...we all get it from time to time. They're those lingering doubts that prevent us from taking the plunge into what could be an exciting and rewarding experience, but... What if nobody comes?Tip #1: Work with a partner as a co-host. (And do your marketing) When you have a co-host, you'll always be guaranteed a great conversation – at least with your partner if no one else! Having a partner also gives you a back up in case of illness or other emergencies. The partner can also help with marketing: we do need to actively advertise and reach out to get people to our conversations – and to attract a continuing infusion of new participants and perspectives to keep the conversations alive and exciting. We can go beyond our own networks by such means as posting flyers, getting short articles/blurbs/listing in local papers, calendars and newsletters. |

Dialogue Wisdom |
|
| By David Kimball, Conversation Café Host
This is a great book to make you stop and think about what makes for great dialogue. It helps you ask the right questions such is "How do I define great dialogue?. How can I create the environment for great dialogue? What are the elements that make up a great dialogue?" The author defines dialogue as a conversation with a center, and not with sides. Instead of focusing on our differences, it channels our energies on something that is newly created. It is even more than finding a consensus as it is a context from which many new associations and prospects can be presented. We often feature excellent articles we've collected about conversations that matter. We welcome readers to forward powerful articles to us. Send your submission to our CC Administrator. |

Host Learning Circle |

A New Resource for Hosts Hosting Conversation Cafés may be one of the most rewarding and complex volunteer activities you've ever done. The conversations are at once rich and challenging. Topics, guests and keeping the agreements can be thrilling or tough or both at once. You as a host are outposts for civility and community in a sea of alienation and confusion. Hosts are courageous conversationalists. We can all use an occasional hand - a round of applause and a bit of assistance. Host Support Calls are designed to help you with every aspect of your ongoing hosting and foster a sense of community among current and former hosts around the world. Some calls are open topic, welcoming all concerns and celebrations for group reflection. For others, specific hosts who have a deep interest or good track record in a particular aspect of hosting will share tips and hear yours and together we'll create the breakthroughs we desire.
Don't miss these wonderful opportunities! They are only the cost of a phone call and will be one of your best hours of the week, guaranteed, because it's a meta conversation café among your peer hosts. --Vicki Robin Check the website for information regarding the next HLC event and other HLC services. |

The much talked about and very much anticipated new and improved website is finally here. It made its debut mid-January 2008 just in time for the launch of Conversation Week 2008.
In this new column, Ron Gross will share ideas, techniques, and experiences, including topics for sessions, facilitation strategies, and promotional tips. Ron conducts his Socratic Conversations at Columbia University and throughout New York City, writes a column on lifelong learning for About.com, and is the author of SOCRATES' WAY (www.SocratesWay.com) and 20 other books. While the form of Socratic conversations is somewhat different from Conversation Cafés, the principles and intentions are very much the same. His (and Socrates') wisdom can help us all have livelier, richer, deeper conversations.
